Career day inspires Limpopo pupils
Tuesday 12 March 2019
Global Communications (GC) and Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) recently hosted a career day for twelve top performing grade 12 pupil from Limpopo. The event, which took place at the company’s offices in Centurion, was used as an opportunity for the pupil to learn about the importance of telecommunications and the two-way radio industry in the times of modern day technology.
The learners visited several departments to learn about various career opportunities that exist within the company. The careers include electrical engineering, accounting, sales, human resources, marketing and project management. They were also informed about the GC’s Internship programme.
Many students might feel lost or unsure of their future prospects after completing their high school careers, which is why Lyn Volk, Marketing assistant at Global Communications, organised the event.
“We organised this event to create awareness that there are career opportunities in the two-way radio industry”.
Pamela Dlomu from the Marimane High School, says attending the event helped her to realise that there are more opportunities out there and she was inspired by one of the employees at the company.
“I am now thinking of becoming an electrical engineer like TK, I did not think such jobs were for women. I have really learned a lot during this trip, because I did not know what to do after finishing my matric. I plan on keeping contact with TK so that I can learn more about the job she does and steps to take to get there.” says the 18-year-old.
The partnership between GC and SCSA has been running since 2016. In 2017, the company visited several schools in Limpopo to present the Charlie initiative and support the Junior Student Commander Project. The Charlie initiative encourages pupils to save money from an early age and to use their savings for school projects, or personal use.
The Junior Station Commander Project is a project initiated by the South African Police Service and the Department of Basic Education. The aim of the project is to involve young people in the fight against crime. As part of this GC donated 30 two-way radios to 10 schools in Limpopo, the radios are used by the school Principals, security guards and learners to promote safety in their schools.
The project is aligned to SCSA’s Youth Entrepreneurship and Socio-Economic Empowerment Project’s crime prevention activity.
