Meet Adelaide (above: in pink) she is 10 years old and attends Sizolomphakathi community centre in Mpumalanga Province.
The centre runs a number of critical programmes within the community including a crèche, skills training, gardening, a feeding scheme, homework support and literacy projects.
The name “Sizolomphakathi” means “helping the community”, Adelaide too dreams of helping the community one day by becoming a doctor. She says “I want to be a doctor when I grow up because I love working with people and I feel very unhappy when I see the community is not well. In this way I want to help the community and make sure the people always get help at the hospital”.
Adelaide is in Grade 4 at a local primary school which does not have after school activities. Adelaide comes to the centre every day to take part in the school aftercare programme. This programme provides supervised activities including help with homework, workshops and counselling. Children at the centre receive a balanced cooked meal every day, for many this is the only food they get.
With your support we are able to make sure that children like Adelaide receive healthy food, are kept safe and receive help with their homework so that they can focus on what’s really important – their hopes and dreams.
