Making a Difference
Friday 24 April 2020
Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) & the DO MORE FOUNDATION, founded by RCL FOODS, have begun the distribution of food aid in several identified communities in South Africa, that have higher rates of poverty. The communities include Eesterust and Mamelodi. The beneficiaries are families with children who are dependent on early childhood development centres and school feeding schemes for nutritious meals.
“The lockdown due to COVID-19, has hit vulnerable families the hardest and the food security issue is becoming prominent in South Africa at the moment. At Save the Children South Africa, we are doing a few food distributions, but we do them through community structures, who understand the situation on the ground and can make sure that the food can get to the most vulnerable children and their families. We will be doing this across the country in places like Limpopo,” says SCSA’s CEO Steve Miller.

The DO MORE FOUNDATION’s Executive, Warren Farrer adds that “when we were faced with COVID-19 and the Lockdown one of the things that became glaringly obvious, was how were the ten million children who are part of the school feeding programme, going to receive their one meal a day, that they often rely on as their only meal…To date we have provided over 750 000 meals, across 6 of our provinces, working with organisations like Save the Children.”
Neither organisation can continue to respond to the needs of families and children alone. We are appealing to the public to assist with donations. One of the ways that the public can contribute is through supporting to the #SaveWithStoriesSAcampaign, which is raising funds for children affected by COVID-19. About: Save the Children believes every child deserves a future. In South Africa and around the world, we give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.
DO MORE FOUNDATION: The Foundation inspires collaborative partnerships to “create better tomorrows” for the young children of South Africa. The Foundation places the young child at the centre of our programmes and initiatives with the belief that if you can impact and uplift the life of a young child, you will in turn impact the household which will ultimately positively affect the community.
