Save the Children South Africa CEO assumes new role in fight to end violence against children

Save the Children South Africa CEO, Gugu Ndebele, has assumed her new role as the member of the Executive Committee of the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children. The partnership is a place where all major stakeholder groups come together to channel their actions and resources to end violence against children (VAC).
The stakeholders includes governments, UN agencies, international organisations, civil society, faith groups, the private sector, philanthropic foundations, research practitioners, academics and children themselves.
“Firstly it is an honour that our colleagues from the Save the Children Movement had enough confidence to nominate me. Secondly, the endorsement from the Civil Society Organisations participating in the Partnership was humbling,” says Ndebele, who is currently in New York as a result of her new role.
“I am extremely passionate and dedicated to ending violence against children, both personally and as a member of the Save the Children movement. Civil society has been a key ally in the Global Partnership, working together to support the work of the partnership and to strengthen our work on the ground. It is therefore an honour for me to represent civil society in the executive committee, ensuring strong representation, sharing of information, and presence at the decision-making table in the interest of children globally,” she adds.
Ndebele says the Global Partnership has been instrumental in galvanising the international community around Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in particular target 16.2 to end all forms of VAC.
“It is also clear to me that more needs to be done if we want to meet Agenda 2030 and the SDGs. I believe more focus should be at country level commitment and implementation and more funding needs to be dedicated towards ending VAC,” says Ndebele.
She also paid tribute to her predecessor Trihadi Saptoadi, who she says did an excellent job.
Apart from assuming her new role at the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children, next month Ndebele will be the moderator at the policy forum of the Global Alliance for Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning (GAL) in Mexico. In 2016 she was elected as the Vice-Chair of the Executive Management Bureau of GAL. GAL is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization led initiative, aiming to advance the global literacy agenda.
