Save the Children welcomes the sentencing of the Dros rapist

Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) welcomes the sentence handed down to Dros rapist, Nicolas Ninow. The North Gauteng High Court sentenced Ninow to life in prison for the heinous crime, on Thursday.
Last month, Ninow was found guilty of raping a now seven-year-old girl in the bathroom of a Dros restaurant in Pretoria last year.
“It is about time that courts laid down strict sentences on perpetrators of such acts of violence against children. A child’s life has been changed forever, and perpetrators need to be held accountable for their actions. Save the Children is pleased with the sentence and hopes that this will act as a deterrent to would be perpetrators, that we will not tolerate such actions,” says Divya Naidoo, SCSA’s Child Protection Programme Manager.
SCSA reiterates its call for all ‘child-friendly’ restaurants to develop or review their child safeguarding policies. SCSA is available and willing to assist businesses that are reviewing or will initiate child safeguarding policies following this horrific act of violence against a child.
“Restaurants such as Dros need to see the importance of child safeguarding from a policy level. They need to know that they have a responsibility to protect their customers, including children, that come through their doors,” adds Naidoo.
The Crime Stats that were released by the Police Minister Bheki Cele last month, revealed that sexual offenses committed against children increased by 3,8% in the 2018/2019 financial year. The death of a six-year-old girl, who was raped in Limpopo, is another gruesome reminder that we are failing our children.
